This week Ben and Ian sit down for an interview with composer Kevin MacLeod and director Ryan Camarda to talk about Royalty Free: The Music of Kevin MacLeod and it’s current Kickstarter.

Kevin runs the website Incompetech.com where anybody can listen to, download, and legally use his 2,000+ audio tracks in whatever their project is as long as they either credit him for it or pay a small fee for no credit. He shares with us his thoughts on how copyright is broken, how people such as himself are using Creative Commons in a hope to eventually surpass it, and what it’s been like dealing with content ID matching systems for sites where people use his music.

Ryan is a film maker who used Kevin’s music so often in his own productions he started to wonder, what’s the story behind somebody who shares their work online for anybody to use and edit freely? He shares production plans for their documentary, interviews they’re collecting for it, some of his experiences working with Kevin’s music, and stories about working on martial arts movies and real vampire documentaries.

We’d like to thank them both for coming to talk with us and Ryan for sticking around for some trivia after the interview. (It just wouldn’t be a NoRights Podcast without trivia, would it?) We want to encourage everyone to check out RoyaltyFreeDoc.com/Kickstarter to support the film. You can help them out for as little as $5 or as much as you’d like to give to get the corresponding rewards package. There’s something for everybody there. Finally, here’s the video version of the podcast for you to enjoy as well.
